Tibetan External Therapies
བོད་ལུགས་ཕྱི་བཅོས་རིག་པ།

Hor-mey therapy (ཧོར་མེ།)
Hor-mey therapy is a simple and effective therapy used in traditional Tibetan Medicine. In this treatment herbal wraps are soaked in heated oil, then applied to special points on the body. Hor-mey works to balance our wind-element energy, known as “Loong” (རླུང།). It is a warm, relaxing and nourishing treatment.

Benefits of Hor-mey Therapy
Hor-mey is effective for reducing mental and physical stress. It helps boost the immune system, combats insomnia and increases the quality of sleep. Hor-mey is indicated for common mind and body imbalances including: stress, anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive thoughts, “monkey” mind, floating sensations, depression, PTSD, ADD, ADHD, and insomnia. Hor-mey therapy is also very effective for women’s health issues (menstrual problems, pregnancy, and menopause). It can increase the wellness of seniors and benefit people recovering from serious illnesses such as cancer

Tza-chug Therapy (རྩ་བྱུག།)
Tza-chug is a treatment of herbal infused hot oils applied externally to the body. Tza-chug is one of the most common external treatments in Tibetan Medicine. It has been used for thousands of years. “Tza” means channels or blood vessels in the body and “chug” means to apply ornaments or oil on the body. In this treatment, natural oils are combined with different herbs including turmeric and ginger, and then heated. The heated oil is then massaged into the affected area of the body, along the spine and outwards to the arms and legs. Tza-chug is one of the most popular external treatments at our clinic.

Benefits of Tza-chug Therapy
Tza-chug helps to relieve nerve pain or neurological related pain and discomforts including rigidity, stiffness, and tightness in the body as well as pain and other symptoms from skeletal-muscular injuries. Other conditions that may benefit from Tza-chug include Achilles tendonitis, carpal tunnel disorder, tendonitis, headaches, frozen shoulders and arthritis.

Ku-nye (བསྐུ་མཉེ།)
Tibetan Ku-nye, (pronounced "koo-nyee") massage has been practiced for thousands of years in Tibet and the Himalayan region of Asia. Ku-nye is an integral part of Tibetan Medicine. Kunde is honored to offer this ancient healing practice to our patients to assist them in maximum relaxation.

In Tibetan, the word “Ku” means to apply oil and “Nye” means to apply pressure with movements. The practitioner use both relaxation massage techniques and deep-tissue work. They focus on specific points on the body which correspond to different constitutions or natures of illnesses. Ku-nye uses natural oils such as butter, sesame oil, olive oil and sandalwood oil, depending on the individual nature of your body constitution. Remember! Your Ku-nye practitioner is a fully trained Tibetan Medicine Practitioner, more than just a “massage therapist”. They are qualified to can provide advice for your diet and lifestyle.

Benefits of Ku-nye
Ku-nye is beneficial as a stand-alone treatment or combined with other modalities. Regular Ku-nye treatments relax tensions, improve the general health, strengthen the body and help prevent illness. Since ancient times in Tibet, it has been believed that Ku-nye aids in longevity by clearing and sharpening the sensory organs while supporting the function of the internal organs.

Conditions that may benefit from Ku-nye therapy include neurological problems such as numbness, sciatica, and paralysis. It may benefit psychological and emotional imbalances including agitation, anxiety, depression, moodiness, forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating and insomnia. Ku-nye is excellent for stress related disorders such as migraines and tension headaches, back pain, women’s health issues including irregular menstruation, PMS, dysmenorrhea, pregnancy and labor pains. Other issues such as constipation, tight muscles, joints and ligaments, neck and shoulder rigidity, whiplash, poor circulation, dry and rough skin and plantar fasciitis (heel pain) may benefit from this therapy.

Sang-bom Therapy (Copper ཟངས་བུམ། or Glass ཤེལ་བུམ། Cupping)
Sang-bom is Tibetan Medicine’s special technique of cupping. The function of cupping is to alleviate acute or chronic pain by improving circulation in the channels of body. Sang-bom provides detoxification by opening the pores of the skin. The cups may leave red or purplish bruise on the skin, but these will disappear in a few days.

Benefits of Sang-born Therapy
The cups can be made of many different materials. The ones we use in our clinic are made of copper and glass. The copper cupping releases more tension and stress of emotional and mental imbalances. The glass cupping works better for acute pain and chronic musculo-skeletal pain. Both style of cups are used for digestive problems. Cupping is very beneficial for pain and tension in the muscles, tendons and bones. It is also helpful for headaches, dizziness, asthma, early stages of a cold with runny nose and cough, digestive problems and menstrual cramps.

Mer-tzar མེ་བཙའ། (Moxibustion)
Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant material called "moxa" is burned very near the surface of the skin. This functions to warm and invigorate the flow of Qi in the body and dispel certain pathogenic influences.

Practitioners hold a burning moxa stick close to the surface of the skin, producing a unique form of penetrating heat. The smoldering moxa stick is held over specific areas, often, though not always, corresponding to certain acupuncture points. The glowing end of the moxa stick is held about an inch or two above the surface of the skin until the area reddens and becomes suffused with warmth.

It is not uncommon for patients receiving moxibustion therapy to report a sudden flooding of warmth that quickly radiates along a specific pathway (usually corresponding to the channel that is being treated) away from the site of application. This is a good result, as it indicates that the flow of Qi has been freed in the channel.

Benefits of Mer-tzar
Moxibustion is helpful for pain due to injury or arthritis, especially in “cold” patterns where the pain naturally feels better with the application of heat. It helps boost the immune system to protect against cold and flu. Moxa especially effective in the treatment of chronic problems, "deficient conditions" and elderly patients. Moxibustion is indicated for digestive problems such as constipation. It is also used for certain gynecological and obstetrical conditions.
